Training starts Firefighter Project - Los Bomberos de Puerto Plata

Bomberos de Puerto PlataIn June of 2011, three Puerto Plata firefighters, “bomberos” Chief Pedro Martínez, Sgt. Pedro Martínez Jr., and Sgt. Major Roberto González, flew to Rochester to attend an intensive three week period of Firefighter I training and lodge and gain field experience with RPD fire companies.

Under the tutelage and guidance of Monroe Community College and Monroe County Fire Bureau instructors and Rochester firefighter volunteers at the Public Safety Training Facility on Scottsville Road, the Dominican firemen received state of the art training followed by a thorough evaluation of the program and their experience...

RHBA HBPOY 2011 recognized during Hispanic Heritage Month

Dr. Emeterio OteroDr. Emeterio Otero, RHBA Hispanic Business Person of the Year 2011, received a special recognition for his work on behalf of students during the First Lation Student College Fair.

The event took place at the City Hall Atrium on October 7.

 

 

SEPTEMBER

RHBA celebrates Hispanic Business Person of the Year 2011

Dr. Emeterio OteroOn September 29 the Rochester Hispanic Business Association honored Dr. Emeterio Otero with the RHBA Hispanic Business Person of the Year 2011 Award, during our annual luncheon.

Dr. Otero is the Executive Dean, Damon City Campus, Monroe Community College. A very active personality in the Hispanic community, Dr. Otero's extensive community service includes the participation in the Board of numerous non-profit organizations, hosting and producing of a TV program, as well as working as a volunteer.

The event keynote speaker was Mauricio Riveros, Vice President of Project Controls at The Pike Company.

 

AUGUST

Luis A. Martinez executive coach for Minority Chamber of Commerce and NSHMBA National Conference

Luis MartinezThe Minority Chamber of Commerce, doing business internationally, has chosen RHBA member Luis A. Martinez (Gran Altura) as preferred service provider for entrepreneurial executive coaching. Mr. Martinez will be doing more work in Miami and Washington, D.C.

Mr. Martinez has also been asked for 3rd consecutive year to be Executive Coach at the NSHMBA National Conference to take place on Anaheim CA on October 13-15, 2011.

 

Luis A. Martinez to Speak at Major Diversity Conference this Fall

Luis A. Martinez (Gran Altura) is one of the speakers invited to participate at the Diversity 2011 Conference: The Power of Inclusion conference on October 2 - 3, 2011. The presentation, The World Is Flat - Implications for Business, Ethics and Human Resources, will cover how to anticipate and discover issues brought by globalization for all businesses, among others objectives.

RHBA & RHBA Members to Present Scholarships to Hispanic Students

The Rochester Hispanic Business Association will present two scholarships to local Hispanic students during the Annual Gala & Hispanic Scholarship Recognition Awards hosted by Ibero-American Action League on June 11, 2011.

LaBella Associates, P.C. acquires Pennsylvania firm CECO Associates, Inc.

LaBellaThis is the second acquisition LaBella Associates, P.C. has made in the last 12 months. Sergio Esteban, CEO of LaBella Associates, P.C. said during an interview for the Rochester Business Journal that "Geographic expansion has been an strategic initiative for LaBella for the last three years".

Fred Tillinghast (The Battery) appointed Director of Admissions at Bishop Kearney H.S.

Fred TillinghastFred Tillinghast (The Battery) has been appointed Director of Admissions at Bishop Kearney High School.

Mr. Tillinghast, has worked for nearly 10 years at BKHS in different positions; most recently as Dean of Students and previous to that teaching business, religion and Spanish.

Dr. John A. Martin (Roberts Wesleyan College) receives Special Recognition Award

John A MartinDr. John A. Martin, president of Roberts Wesleyan College, received a Special Recognition Award presented by the Gates-Chili Chamber of Commerce during their 26th Annual Community Awards Dinner on April 28th, 2011.

Dr. Martin presides over the largest employer in the town of Chili since 1996.

 

Annette Jimenez (El Mensajero Católico) First Place winner for News Story by the New York Press Association (NYPA)

Annette JiménezAnnette Jiménez, (El Mensajero Católico), received First Place in the category News Story (Division 2, 5,001-9,000 circulation) Award from the New York Press Association (NYPA). Annette received this recognition for the compeling story "Programas ayudan a los latinos a vencer las adicciones de substancias" ("Programs help Latinos overcome substance abuse") published last November.

Kelly T. Mullaney (Working Art Media) featured as a Latino to Watch at La Voz Magazine

Kelly T. MullaneyRochester Hispanic Business Association Board Member and Webmaster Kelly Tovar Mullaney (Working Art Media) was featured as a Latino To Watch by La Voz Magazine for the month of March.

Apart from managing her own business, Kelly is also an active member of the local community (whether as a member of the board, a volunteer or a photographer for different organizations and events), and of the online social media scene.

Antonio Vieira Guest Speaker at Children's School of Rochester Graduation

Tony Vieira at Children's School of Rochester

Rochester Hispanic Business Association Board Member and Treasurer Antonio Vieira was invited to be Guest Speaker and address 6th graders during their recent graduation at The Children's School of Rochester No. 15.

A large number of students from The Children's School of Rochester are from immigrant families, and about half of them are English learners who among all speak 35 different languages. During the Christmas holidays Mr. Vieira initiated a drive within RHBA to collect donations of winter clothes for students from this school.

RHBA and GRC-NAWBO biz training seminars catering catering to members

NAWBORHBAWe are please to announce that the Rochester Hispanic Business Association and the Greater Rochester Chapter of the National Asociation of Women Business Owners (GRC-NAWBO) have agreed to extend to each others members the benefit of reduced member price for their evening business seminars.

GRC-NAWBO Education and Resources (E&R) seminar series takes place the first Thursday of the month, from 6:00 to 8:00pm.

RHBA Business Growth seminar series takes place on the last Tuesday of the month, from 4:00 to 5:30 pm.

Grace Tillinghast elected secretary of Board of Trustees of Discovery Charter School

Grace TillinghastRHBA Chair Grace Tillinghast (The Battery) has been elected secretary of the Board of Trustees of Discovery Charter School. Last month, the New York State Board of Regents approved the creation of Discovery Charter School (DCS), a new elementary charter school in the Rochester area that expects to locate on the campus of Bishop Kearney High School.

Carlos Carballada named Acting Mayor of the City of Rochester

Carlos CarballadaCarlos Carballada, RHBA member and RHBA 2010 Hispanic Business Person of the Year, is to step in as acting Rochester mayor on Thursday January 20, 1011. Mr. Thomas Richards resigned so that he may run for the office in the next elections scheduled for March.

Carlos Carballada (of Spanish and Peruvian descent) becomes the city's first Hispanic mayor. Carballada will serve about three months, until about early April, when the next mayor likely will take office.
