JUNE

RHBA Awards Scholarships to Hispanic Students

Brian Chester and Briana Lopez Continuing with its tradition of celebrating the achievements of Hispanic students, RHBA has awarded scholarships to two young Hispanics: Brian Chester and Briana Lopez.

Brian is a graduating senior at Gananda High School. He plans to continue his studies at Canisius College in Buffalo and will major in International Relations with a minor in Spanish and Italian.

Briana is presently a student at Dansville High Scvhool. She will attend Elmira College ad will pursue a career in business administration.

The scholarships were presented at the 13th Annual Gala and Scholarships Awards of the Ibero-American Action League on June 7th.

RHBA board member and Membership Chair Grace Tillinghast chaired the Hispanic Scholarship Endowment Fund Selection Committee.  RHBA board member and Website Chair Kelly Tovar Mullaney was a member of the selection committee. $205,000 were awarded in scholarships to 23 college-bound Hispanic students from the Rochester area.

Felipe de Chateauvieux has been featured in an article of the April issue of the Daily Record. The article, titled "Court interpreter 'an intelligent phone', describes how Mr. Chateauvieux's got started a Spanish language interpreter in the courts and what the job entitles.

MAY

Grace Tillinghast was recognized for Outstanding Service as Chair of the 2007 Arts Awards Selection Committee for the Arts and Cultural Council for Greater Rochester. She has chaired the annual event for the last six years and will co-chair the 2008 Arts Awards Selection Committee. Grace is a board member of the Arts Council and Membership Chair of the Rochester Hispanic Business Association.

Grace Tillinghast has been appointed Treaurer of the Do the Right Thing Program of the Rochester Police Department. The appointment is effective immediately.

APRIL

Manuel Rivera-Ortiz is part of the new book Voices in First Person. Published by Simon & Schuster, the book is a collection of monologues written by accomplished Latino authors.
Manuel has also a featured article in the April issue of Rangefinder, a magazine for professional photographers.

Jackie Ortiz was recently appointed as member of Ibero-American Action League board of directors and is featured in the April issue of ConXion in the column In Good Company. Jackie Ortiz is an Insurance and Financial services agent for State Farm.

MARCH

Easter ToysEaster Bounty for Children at Strong Hospital.
The Rochester Hispanic Business Association donated a selection of bunnies, ducks, chicks to the children at the Golisano Children’s Hospital at Strong Hospital. Grace Tillinghast, delivered the toys that were given to the children on Easter Sunday.

 

Free tax preparation for senior citizens, people in disability.
You are required to file a 2007 Federal Income Tax in order to receive a Tax Rebate Check.   Many of our senior citizens and disabled have had no need to file in the past yet will need to file this year to receive the Tax Rebate Check. Burgos Income Tax (Alfred Burgos and Vilma Burgos-Torres) is offering free tax preparation on Saturday March 15, 2008 for this sector of our community.

25 Anniversary of The Battery.
The Battery, the first indoor baseball and softball training facility in Western New York, turned twenty five years old this week. When Co-Owners John, Grace and Frederick Tillinghast started the business, people were using the batting cages to practice and improve their baseball and softball swings. They incorporated training sessions such as the Winter Baseball Academy which has just finished its 23rd season, a Spring Baseball Academy, hittings camps for all ages, an Advanced Hitter's Club and individual lessons in catching, fielding, hitting and pitching.

FEBRUARY

Vilma Burgos Torres is featured in the front page story of ConXion: "Escaping the No. 1 Killer", as she crusades to warn others of heart disease in women. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the leading killer of Latinos, claiming more than 122,000 lives per year.

Bera Jurado has written the column "Why I became an American citizen" in this month's issue of ConXion, where he recounts his story coming to the United States to currently proposing an initial apolitical civic movement leading to the eventual creation of a Hispanic Anti-Defamation League.

JANUARY

LaBella Associates won contract for a redevelopment plan for the Midtown Plaza site (Sergio Esteban, CEO). LaBella will be responsible to perform the environmental review process, suggest PAETEC's placement on the parcel, evaluate whether Midtown's underground garage should be saved or scrapped, and recommend how the rest of the site should be used.

John Romero, technology entrepreneur and owner of Reboot Technologies was the featured business person in the Career Milestones column of the Sunday Edition of the Democrat and Chronicle (1/6/2008). The article describes how John got motivated to start his business, the type of services his company offers and his plans for the future.

DECEMBER

The RHBA celebrated the end of the year with a holiday gathering at Nazareth College Casa Hispana.

"Don Francisco" (Mario Kreutsberger) host of Spanish-language show Sabado Gigante is named Honorary Member of RHBA during the association holiday celebration on December 14th.

Juan Contreras, co-owner of Juan and Maria's Empanada Stop to receive international exposure, as they are featured in a segment titled "Ejemplo Hispano" on the popular Hispanic TV variety show "Sabado Gigante". The interview is scheduled to be aired on Saturday January 19th, 2008 to an audience of approximately 100 million viewers around the world.

Eduardo Navarro, CEO of EIC Electronics and President of RHBA was interviewed by local channel 13. on Saturday December 8th in reference to the upcoming appearance of Juan Contreras in the TV program Sabado Gigante and its relevance for the city of Rochester and the Hispanic business community.

Damaris Rivera announced the opening of her pet boutique "Pinky's Pet Connection" on the weekend of December 9. The new store, located at the newly renovated 55 Station building, near the Public Market, specializes in pet clothes, pet accessories and baked goods for dogs, and offers as well a pet sitting service.
Damaris was also featured in the "Up Close" section of the Sunday Business section of the Democrat and Chronicle.
